Buy a little extra

The can's coverage rating assumes smooth, sealed wood and ideal conditions, which real decks rarely match. It's worth picking up an extra quart or gallon beyond the estimate — running out mid-coat leaves lap marks where the new can overlaps, and a sealed, opened can stores fine for touch-ups next season.

Estimates use typical 2026 coverage rates (clear ~350, semi-transparent ~250, solid ~200 sq ft per gallon on smooth wood) and convert railing length to surface at about 4 sq ft per linear foot. They don't include stairs, fascia/skirting, or pergolas — add those areas if you're coating them. Always check your product's stated coverage and number of coats, and test on a hidden spot first, since species, age, and prep change how much the wood absorbs.

Running out of deck stain halfway through is one of the most frustrating — and avoidable — weekend-project mistakes. Buy too little and you're left with lap marks where a fresh can overlaps a dried section; buy way too much and you've wasted money. The two things most coverage estimates miss are exactly the two that cause people to come up short: railings hold a surprising amount of surface area for their footprint, and weathered or rough wood drinks far more stain than the can's smooth-wood rating suggests. Account for both and you'll buy the right amount the first time.

The calculator adds up every surface you're coating, divides by a realistic coverage rate, multiplies by your coat count, and rounds up to whole gallons.

It starts with your deck floor area and adds the railing surface. Railings are deceptive: a section of balustrade has a top rail, a bottom rail, balusters with four faces each, and posts — so a foot of railing holds far more coatable surface than a foot of floor. The tool converts your railing length to surface at about 4 square feet per linear foot, which is why adding the railing can increase your total area substantially.

Next it sets a coverage rate from your finish type — clear sealers spread the farthest, semi-transparent stains a bit less, and solid/opaque stains the least because they lay down a thicker, pigmented film. Then it derates that rate for wood condition: smooth, newer wood is close to the rated coverage, while weathered or rough wood absorbs much more, dropping the effective coverage well below the label number.

Finally it multiplies the total area by your number of coats, divides by the effective coverage to get the exact gallons, and rounds up — because you buy stain in whole cans, not fractions. The exact formula and a worked example are below.

The estimate combines all coatable surface, derates coverage for wood condition, and rounds up.

Step 1 — Total coatable area: Railing surface = Railing length × 4 sq ft per linear foot Total area = Deck floor area + Railing surface

Step 2 — Effective coverage: Effective coverage = Base coverage × Condition factor

Base coverage by finish (smooth wood): clear ~350, semi-transparent ~250, solid ~200 sq ft per gallon. Condition factor: smooth 1.0, weathered 0.75, rough 0.6.

Step 3 — Gallons: Exact gallons = (Total area × Coats) ÷ Effective coverage Gallons to buy = Exact gallons, rounded up to the next whole gallon

Example: A 320 sq ft semi-transparent deck with 40 ft of railing, smooth wood, 2 coats

→ Railing surface: 40 × 4 = 160 sq ft

→ Total area: 320 + 160 = 480 sq ft

→ Effective coverage: 250 × 1.0 = 250 sq ft/gal

→ Exact gallons: (480 × 2) ÷ 250 = 3.8 gal

→ Gallons to buy: 4

Notice the railing added 160 sq ft — fully a third of the total. Skip it in your estimate and you'd buy a gallon short.

🔍Finding your inputs

Finish type: Pick what you're applying. A clear or toner sealer is the most economical per gallon and shows the wood's natural look. A semi-transparent stain adds color while letting the grain show, and covers a bit less. A solid (opaque) stain looks almost like paint, hides the grain, and covers the least because it's a thicker film — it also typically needs two coats.

Deck floor area: The walking surface, in square feet — length times width. For an L-shaped or multi-level deck, figure each rectangle and add them up. Don't include the railing here; it has its own field so the tool can convert it correctly.

Railing length: The total linear feet of railing you plan to coat — walk the perimeter that has railing and add it up. The tool turns that into coatable surface automatically, accounting for the top and bottom rails, balusters on both sides, and posts. If your deck has no railing, or you're only doing the floor, enter 0. (Cable or glass railings hold much less surface than wood balusters, so reduce the footage if that's what you have.)

Wood condition: How absorbent the wood is. Choose smooth/new for recently milled or previously sealed boards in good shape. Choose weathered for wood that's been exposed for a season or more and looks gray or dry. Choose rough/porous for rough-sawn lumber or old, heavily weathered decking that soaks up finish quickly. The rougher and drier the wood, the more stain it drinks — especially on the first coat.

Number of coats: How many coats you'll apply, per your product's directions. Many penetrating stains and sealers are designed for a single coat or "two wet-on-wet" passes; solid stains usually want two full coats. When in doubt, two thin coats last longer and look more even than one heavy one.

⚠️Special situations

I forgot to measure my railings

Don't skip them — railings are the single biggest reason people run out of stain. A balustrade packs a top rail, bottom rail, balusters (four faces each), and posts into every linear foot, so it holds roughly four times the coatable surface of the same length of floor. If you can't measure exactly, the railing usually runs close to the deck's perimeter, so use that as a stand-in. Cable and glass railings are the exception — they have far less wood to coat, so enter much less footage or just the posts and rails.

My deck is old, gray, and rough

Weathered and rough wood is thirsty, especially on the first coat, so set the condition to weathered or rough and expect to use noticeably more than the can claims. Just as important is prep: clean and, if needed, brighten the wood first, and let it dry fully (often 24–48 hours), because stain won't absorb evenly into dirty or damp boards. A light sanding of fuzzy, rough spots also helps the finish lay down and stretch further. Prep is what separates a coat that lasts from one that flakes in a year.

Should I do one coat or two?

It depends on the product and the look you want. Many penetrating sealers and semi-transparent stains are formulated for a single coat, or a 'wet-on-wet' second pass applied before the first dries — adding a third dry coat can actually leave a sticky, peeling film. Solid stains generally want two coats for full, even color. Follow the label, set the coat count here to match, and remember that two thin coats almost always wear better and look more uniform than one thick one.

I'm also staining the stairs and skirting

This calculator covers the deck floor and railings only, so add the other surfaces yourself. For stairs, estimate the tread and riser area (a rough rule is about 1 sq ft per linear foot of stair width per step, doubled if you're coating risers). For skirting or fascia, multiply the run by the board height. Add those square footages to your deck floor area, or just buy an extra gallon if the extras are modest — it's cheaper than a second trip to the store.

I have leftover stain from last time

Unopened or well-sealed stain often keeps for a year or two if it didn't freeze and isn't separated beyond remixing. Subtract any usable leftover from the gallons-to-buy figure here. One caution on color: pigmented stains can vary slightly between batches, so if appearance matters, either use the old can for a less-visible area (under furniture, stairs) or buy all new cans from the same lot and have them shaken together at the store.

How much deck stain do I need?

It depends on your deck's total coatable area (floor plus railings), the finish type, the wood's condition, and how many coats you're applying. Yes — they're the most underestimated part of a deck. Why does my wood soak up more stain than the can says?

Coverage ratings on the label assume smooth, sound wood in good condition. Real decks are often rougher, older, or weathered, and that thirstier wood absorbs much more finish — particularly on the first coat. Bare, sun-grayed, or rough-sawn boards can drop your effective coverage by 25 to 40 percent. This tool lets you set the wood condition so the estimate reflects what your boards will actually drink, not the best-case lab number.

Is it better to apply one thick coat or two thin coats?

Two thin coats, almost always. A thick coat can pool, stay tacky, and peel because the finish sits on the surface instead of penetrating. Thin coats absorb evenly, dry properly, and wear longer. That said, follow your specific product — many penetrating stains are meant for a single coat or a wet-on-wet second pass, and over-applying them causes problems. Should I buy a little extra deck stain?

Usually yes.
